Lviv, Ukraine + why this city is the new fashion capital of the world

3 days post-touchdown in JFK – jet lag and exhaustion still going strong; excitement and inspiration also won’t quit. Overwhelmed by the beauty and spirit of the people, fashion, experiences and just… life we encountered over the 10 days city-hopping across Ukraine, I am attempting to condense an avalanche of feelings and memories into this post.

This may have been my favorite trip of all time. Every restaurant serving culinary masterpieces may have had something to do with it. Every Ukrainian designer I discovered offering fashion-forward undeniable quality also contributed. Jokes aside, spilling experiences on paper (on screen?) – I’m staying true to a promise from the Washington D.C. post – giving you a mix of travel advice + sustainable fashion food for thought.

Poyihali. (“let’s go”)

LVIV…

Located almost at the western border of Ukraine, Lviv architecture has a slight resemblance to Warsaw, Poland or Prague, Czech Republic – buildings and monuments in baroque / renaissance styles & gothic elements in churches. We (mainly me) were actually panicking on our Kyiv-Peremyshl train frantically attempting to figure out where exactly Peremyshl is (spoiler alert – Poland). Chances of napping through a 5-minute Lviv train stop and having morning coffee in Poland less than an hour later were fairly high.

The city has a cozy feel with cobblestone streets, outdoor restaurants, terraces and balconies, street food and drinks, intricate unique details in urban elements – benches, street lamps, curbs – even garbage cans are unique to the city with lion engravings. Scroll down to the photo taken from our hotel balcony: you can know zero facts about Lviv, but still feel the presence of rich history: in every multi-paneled window, brick chimney, statue – 760+ years.

Lviv residents are very patriotic, passionate, speaking beautiful nearly-perfect Ukrainian – which was new to me – a Ukrainian girl growing up speaking in “surzhik” (what we call a dialect of Ukrainian where russian words or accents occasionally creep in). My delusions in thinking I could pull off speaking perfect Ukrainian effectively crashed and burned in Lviv – once I ordered a bottle of alcohol instead of a glass, so that was great.

…IS THE FASHION CAPITAL…

Before a breakdown of aforementioned culinary masterpieces, I need to confess: I have never seen as many stylish people at once in my life as I have in my 2 days in Lviv.

Sitting outside one of the market square outdoor cafes with a sangria, breaking my neck at every other street styler walking by – everyone looked like they stepped off magazine pages, it was madness.

Lviv girls manage to look chic and styled, but somehow effortless – elusive combination often talked about in fashion and difficult to achieve. Typically the pendulum swings in one direction. Spotted looks were usually in very loose silhouettes, neutral tones, lots of very cool oversized denim pieces & balloon trousers – often completed with very well structured classic outerwear pieces like trench coats and dusters. Spring Lviv weather was perfect for layers – creativity everywhere.

Let’s just say I would absolutely hate to wonder the streets of Lviv looking the way I did pre-hotel and pre-shower…

…AND HERE’S WHY

SEASON UA polka dot midi dress purchased 3 days prior – to the rescue. At this stage in the trip, I successfully ran out of packed clothes and brought out Vsi Svoi purchases from made in Kyiv. Vsi Svoi is a local marketplace for Ukrainian brands: locally designed, supplied and manufactured.

Shopping in Ukraine, I was looking for fashion investments I would consider timeless – silhouettes leaning towards structured, clean and modern. Now that I think about it, the perfect 3 words to describe Lviv’s street style. The reason why looks were such a strong mix of effortless and “effort-ful” was mainly through inclusion of basics: simple tops and tanks, oversized jackets and blazers, plain pant silhouettes, loose white/nude/pastel midi dresses, chunky boots, structured skirts…

Most looks I spotted featured individual items that could complement a range of unique styles. Strong lasting basics are an important piece of sustainable fashion – specifically from high quality, recyclable, organic materials. Not to break bank, of course, shoppers turn to fast fashion retailers for basics – but not only will those look as cheap as they cost, they won’t prove their price in number of wears. Thrifting luxury basic pieces that’ll serve as a base for many looks is also an option to achieve that Lviv-style street style.

FINALLY: THE BACKPACK

It’s by a Ukrainian brand called AnnaSun – of course, sustainable & focusing on preserving the environment, while creating classic high quality accessories.

The backpack I’m holding is made of faux leather, will complement quite literally any outfit and retails for $35.

AnnaSun bags are made and sold locally in Kyiv, so production is very carefully monitored – the brand firmly stands behind «Усвідомлене споживання, meaning conscious consumption.

THE FOOD

Two days time limits the list of local restaurants quite a bit, yet we stayed ambitious and made the most of our time. Some note-worth spots from our short experience:

Baczewski Restaurant

Lviv is famous for beer that’s made locally and THIS is the place to try some locally produced ale and brew. Cocktails here are also delicious and elaborate, each one served with a unique presentation – funky glasses, dry ice, polaroids, and more.

Atlas

Great spot for people watching – where I observed a street fashion show with sangria in-hand. This might be the only place in Lviv where I found a sangria on the menu as well – which I guarantee is unique to my short trip here. Their cheese plate was also perfection.

Drunk Cherry

A chain of little bars around Lviv where you can order a glass of cherry wine (or a bottle, whichever floats your boat) and sip while standing outside on the street enjoying the city, street style, crowds & trolleys passing by.

Meat and Burger

For all you meat lovers, this is a great place. The menu immediately gives you a wine recommendation to each burger or steak. Order a coffee here – which, Lviv is famous for as well. Coffee in Lviv is locally produced and usually incredible all around town, even McDonalds.
