3 must-have t-shirts by Ukrainian brands posted in August 2024 featured the same top by JUL and a sustainable fashion blogger losing her grip on what this platform is supposed to be about – bringing meaningful change, one drop in the ocean at a time. I wanted to elevate Ukrainian labels in my content but also talk about sustainability and ethics of the behemoth that is the fashion industry, which now felt weird side by side with cheering on the burning and destruction of russian oil refineries. With this new pivot to Ukrainian fashion content and sticking to my usual habit of preserving, caring for and rewearing old items, I started thinking about what has to happen for a consumer to truly cherish an item hanging in their closet – thus the idea for this post: items (mainly tops) with a story, statement or purpose. Made in UA of course. I compiled 10 for you to consider.
Saint Javelin – Embroidered Tryzub T-Shirt
I’ve been following Saint Javelin since the start of the 2022 full scale invasion – latest news, updates, memes – it’s a solid resource with a merch shop with a purpose. Their oversized tee keeps its message simple: a densely embroidered Tryzub, the national symbol of a sovereign Ukraine, placed on a piece you can wear for years. Although the social enterprise was founded in Canada, much of its production has moved to Ukraine, helping direct work and income into the Ukrainian economy. The brand has also raised substantial funds for Ukraine – including more than $1 million reported by UNITED24 in 2022 and a recent $25,000 donation supporting rehabilitation programs for Ukrainian veterans with amputations.
Touchof – “We Will Rave”
Touchof’s “We Will Rave” shirt combines the Tryzub, a sunflower, a bird and a star with a promise that Ukrainian life will not be reduced only to suffering and survival. The message is about the future waiting on the other side of resistance – the right to gather, dance, celebrate and live freely on Ukrainian land. It communicates patriotism through contemporary youth culture rather than military imagery alone, making joy itself part of the refusal to be erased.
U-SHIRT – White Green Tryzub T-Shirt
U-SHIRT keeps the symbolism clean and direct with a white cotton tee embroidered in dark green with the Tryzub – Ukraine’s national emblem and one of its clearest symbols of sovereignty. The shirt is made in Ukraine, and the brand has also been recognized by the Commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for its support of wounded soldiers and the Main Military Hospital – giving the purchase a connection not only to Ukrainian production, but to tangible wartime aid.

Synonyms turns one of southern Ukraine’s iconic produce items into a bright declaration: Kherson tomatoes, embroidered across a saturated pink T-shirt. The reference feels playful, but it carries more weight now – Kherson’s produce represents the region’s fertile land, its markets, summer tables and the everyday life russia has tried to destroy or claim (part of Kherson region remains occupied to this day). Supporting Synonyms and Vsi Svoi helps sustain Ukrainian design, retail and local production during wartime. The current one-size style is made from 95% cotton with 5% elastane and uses embroidery rather than a surface print, giving the message a little more permanence.
JUL x Women Make Money
The JUL x Women Make Money tee celebrates women who build careers, financial independence and lives shaped by their own choices. Its retro contrast trim makes it easy to wear, but the message does something bigger in public – it signals that ambition, self-sufficiency and earning power are not things women need to apologize for. Buying from JUL also carries extra weight right now: as Forbes Ukraine reported, JUL was among the Ukrainian fashion brands affected by a russian attack on Brovary, making support for the brand feel meaningful in a very real, material way.
Cukr x Rozmova – “Суми – моя фортеця”
“Sumy is my fortress” can be read literally now, but its power is also personal. The shirt allows people from Sumy and those who stand with the city to make that bond visible, particularly while the region continues to absorb the realities of a frontline border. Created with Sumy-based Ukrainian brand Rozmova, the purchase connects fashion with the survival of independent regional storytelling – helping CUKR.CITY continue showing Sumy as a living community rather than a target on a map.
Cukr x Beraia – “Місце сили і тиші”
“Місце сили і тиші” – a place of strength and quiet – captures the private relationship people develop with my hometown that for the last 5 years, outsiders may know only through alerts, headlines and proximity to the russian border. Made in collaboration with singer Beraia, the shirt treats Sumy not as a news event but as an emotional landscape: a home capable of holding fear, calm, memory and belonging at once. Buying through Ц.Крамниця also supports the ecosystem around CUKR.CITY, independent local media documenting life in Sumy from a city only around 30 kilometers from russia.
UaThreads – Varenyky T-Shirt
Not every meaningful Ukrainian shirt needs to carry the weight of war directly. GUNIA Project’s MALVA tee transforms a simple cotton shirt through embroidery inspired by Ukrainian vytynanky, intricate paper-cut artworks traditionally used to decorate the home.
