What are the biggest buzzwords in fashion?
“Chic,” “comfort,” “luxury,” (as of recently) “sustainability,” and my absolute LEAST favorite one of them all…. “TRENDS”.
I rarely post questionnaires on Instagram stories, but when I do, my most requested topics (in both English and Ukrainian) are always around trends. Most fashion bloggers I follow report the same…uh…trend in requests for posts on fashion trends. Well, unfortunately, this hot topic plays a huge part in why fast fashion is SO popular today. I’m all about comfort and very much against following seasonal trends, but even I don’t see anything wrong with launching SOME every season, like a specific accessory or a color, an outerwear silhouette or a bag shape. But with the speed trends are recycling today, it is impossible for an average consumer to keep up without having to blow all their money away on clothes.
But hey, it’s not all that negative. I reviewed some trends of today and compared them to the trends of the past and realized something: we can absolutely do a take on modern-day fashion by combining some older pieces with some thrifted ones and maybe one or two new ones. The golden rule here: you MUST NOT throw away clothes just because they “go out of style”. Trust me, they’ll be back.
So with all these thoughts, I decided to shoot this look full of winter trends that are very much IN right now. But they were also pretty IN last year. And the year before. So, in conclusion, these are the winter “trends” that will never go out of style.
Talk about universal. The color, the shape and versatility of this piece will always be beautiful and classic. I scrolled through some fashion week archives and found extremely similar outerwear items on the runways of Max Mara last season, Versace 1 year ago (2018), Ralph Lauren 2004 runway, Etro 2001 show… Also spotted on every and all street style divas throughout the years, Ukrainian and American bloggers, and of course knocked off by all kinds of fast fashion retailers. Conclusion: this item is endlessly popular and I can understand why. The color is very dynamic (this kind of darker beige is complementary to just about any look), yet a step away from your basic black and also (and this is a mildly basic opinion) but a perfect shade for fall. The silhouette here is also very classic, without any exaggerated elements like big belts or cinched waists that you’d expect to go out of style in a few months. Bottom line is, if you buy a coat this season to last you many years, you should definitely think about this style and lucky for us all, this item is extremely popular in thrift shops where you can purchase it for a LOT less. So go there first. If you don’t find anything there, my shopping recommendations here are all ethical and safe to shop 
Now, talk about the most universal fabric in the world. I don’t even have to list out which shows and what years I saw denim on the runways…its ALWAYS been popular. THE look right now is “total denim,” a trend I expect to go out of style by the summer of 2020, but which I also love because it doesn’t require you to go shopping for anything extra. Total denim looks have been in-and-out for over 3 decades now, so I think its a safe move to invest in a comfy denim button-down and a high quality pair of jeans that you’ll be able to mix & match depending on the season. With that said, jean silhouettes change drastically throughout the years and may seem hard to keep up with: only recently, the ultra-skinny fit was IN and now we’re all obsessed with the loose-fit low-waisted look, which we thought we hated since Britney and Paris popularized them in the early 2000s… My recommendation when it comes to jeans would be investing in one VERY high quality pair per 1-2 years, a pair that represents the current hot trend. Right now, I have about 6 pairs of jeans in my closet all bought within the range of 2010-last month, and I’ve worn my jeans from 2010 more often in the recent years than I ever expected. Another recommendation I have here is, never throw away your old jeans, even when you think they’re horrible and you can’t believe how you ever bought them. Trust me. They will probably be the hottest thing in your closet again soon.
And lets round out this trio with the most comfortable pair of cowboy boots I ever wore. Also, a trend that was “in” when I was in high school (around 2008) and now back in full swing. Trends usually don’t come back as-is, there is always some kind of an update: a higher heel, a thinner belt, a thicker collar, etc… But there is always a way to play off old vintage items when the trend recycles. The good news with cowboy boots is they’re always in-style as-is. Of course, there are high heeled, slouchy, over-the-knee versions all over the place, but the classic clean cowboy boot always looks stylish, casual, and “trendy”. My boots are by a brand called Tecovas, which is a perfect example of an ethical brand in the gray area I was talking about in previous posts. Tecovas is ethical when it comes to human rights: it is headquartered and designed in Texas, produced ethically in Mexico. However the boots are made of real leather. Usually, I try to find brands that avoid using real animal skins, but can compromise if I know I’ll give the item enough wears. And so far, I was right about this investment: I wore these boots for over a year and they still look new, which makes me believe they’re here to stay. Moral of the story: invest in classic, high quality, more expensive cowboy boots that’ll last you forever and you’ll always be on-trend… and shop less.
